Not Ashamed Of The Gospel?

Posted by: Sonny   in Gospel, Love, Responsibility, witness

The choir in my church sang a song today called, I believe, We Are Not Ashamed.  They have sung this song on many occasions and I am always moved by it.  It is about not being ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  This is something we should all take to heart.

But do we?  How often do we keep silent when we should speak up?  How often do we make sure we do not put ourselves in a place or a position where we might have to speak of the gospel?

Some of us, maybe even all of us at times, find ourselves embarrassingly inadequate at sharing our faith.  Are we really ashamed?   Probably not.  I truly doubt, except in certain situations, that most of us are really ashamed of our God and Savior.  That would be like being ashamed of our wives or girlfriends, husbands or boyfriends.  Most of us are really not ashamed of those we really love.

So what is really the problem?

intimidation_2_smallI believe it is probably intimidation.  I do not, entirely, mean intimidation in the sense of being afraid, but instead being under the impression that it will do no good.  That it won’t really matter or make a difference.  Some of us are concerned with others attitudes toward us and opinions of us and some of us just really think we cannot make a difference.

Why bother talking to that guy at work who is bragging about his adulterous affair?  He won’t listen if he is that outspoken about it and I just might be ostracized from the group for my holier than thou attitude.

That Muslim you know is just so devout that you know you will never reach them, and you are a little intimidated by what you know of their religion; so why take the chance of being looked on as one of those hate spewing Christians?  We can all live together in love, if we keep silent.

And that goes for that very outspoken atheist also.  If we keep silent about our faith, we can all get along very well.  And maybe even love each other.  And if we can show enough love, then that will win out in the end.  Right?

Wrong.  What love is this that is willing to keep silent about something so important?  I started thinking about this post after listening to this video the other day.  In this video you will hear Penn Jillette, a very outspoken, oftentimes crude, but very logical and consistent thinker and atheist.  He is the talkative half of the comedian/ magician team known as Penn and Teller.

He is also what I call a true atheist.  I was one for many years myself.  I believe a true atheist is someone who says they do not believe that there is a God and they are not afraid of those who believe.  We seem to be surrounded today by people calling themselves atheist that are intent on silencing us.  They seem afraid of something, or maybe it is Someone.

In the video you will hear Penn say that if we, as believers, really love everyone and we really believe what we say about heaven and hell, then our love demands that we tell everyone about it; in effect, we should proselytize.  Evangelize, if you prefer.

I admire his stance on this and find that this was the way I felt also.  As a Christian we must tell everyone the gospel.  If we do not, do we really love?  I can’t see how.

We can never be ashamed, and as I stated, I doubt many of us really are.  But we must also never be intimidated.  We may be called intolerant, or a holy roller, or hateful, or many other things; but we must still tell the story because for the sake of love, it is necessary.  Those that can’t except this and call us all of these things are running scared and can probably be reached.

And those that are not running scared, like Penn and like I used to be, will be reached through the consistent witness of love and the telling of the good news.

Listen to the video.  And pray for Penn Jillette.  A transformation of someone like him would be a mighty witness for the Kingdom.

And the next time you feel a little timid about sharing, remember that if you really love them, you have to.

Love you all

That is a powerful video :!:

I am not one of Penn Jillette’s biggest fans by far, but I still do not want him to go to hell. There are so many non-believers out there that sooner or later find themselves in a helpless situation. A situation where the true meaning of “powerlessness” is overwhelming. It is usually then that such a person will call out to a “higher power” of some sort for hope. I feel that we as Christians should do our best to make sure that every person we meet has heard about the love of Jesus Christ in hopes that those desperate people in those desperate situations will choose Him.

I seriously doubt that Penn Jillette will disregard that “little book” that nice man gave him. I believe he will keep it around. And who knows….maybe one day he might find himself in a desperate situation and remember that “little book” and read it.

Peace and Love to all.

An after thought…..

It was not the little Bible that impressed Penn, it was the man who gave it to him. We never know when WE will be someone’s Bible.

Thanks for the new post Sonny. I’m not ever ashamed of Jesus but my own personal shame can stop me from spreading the gospel. its hard to tell someone how they should be a christian when they have just heard me gossiping or gripping about the boss. The thing that would most often stop me though is the fear of confrontation. Most people if asked would say that they are christian, even the guy in the adulteress affair. Or they would say that they are spiritual and enjoy a persional relationship with God and he understands their heart. thats where the confrontation comes in that I prefer to avoid. I pray for them that God will show them the error of their way and that if they come to me i’ll know what to say. I know that thats not always enough though. perhaps thats why God keeps me in the kitchen and not on the front lines!

John,

If you did not listen to the video, I really wish you would.

Jillette has a lot to say about the man that approached him that might be a lesson to us all.

it is only about five minutes, but I found something refreshing in the honesty of Jillette and the simplicity of the Christian involved.

Love you

ok i watched it. it was good-you’ve said similar statements to us in class and to me personally. by saying nothing we are helping them into hell. I agree with you. I would find it easier to approach an athiest with the gospel than someone who thinks they are saved. i dont fear argument or debate, i fear confrontation.

We have to boldly go where no man has…

Wait a minute, that was Star Trek. Sorry.

But seriously, there is nothing to be afraid of. Especially for you. The way you love and your lack of a judgmental attitude would probably go a long way in allowing you to tell someone that you love them and then to be able to tell them why.

Love you John

I still have not been able to view the video, which is why I have not commented.
Do not be surprised if I comment again once I actually view it.

It seems to me that most athiest are trying to intimidate the christians. You used to try to do that, and every one I listen to or read about will do the same thing.
They want the Christian to back down, which is what most of us do.
Are we doing it because we are ashamed or do we lack the knowledge we need for this particular battle. I know that you probably knew more about the bible as an atheist than most believers (including myself) know. That is a sad statement, but I really feel it is a true one.

Since you have started teaching, I have learned so much more about the Word than I had learned the other 20 or 30 years I was exposed to it. I have never really just accepted what someone said because he called himself a preacher, I would try to investigate what was being taught. I did, however, accept a ton of junk that I should not have.

I know now that a ‘pat’ answer will just not do. I have a long way to go, but hopefully I will have something to say other than “because the bible says so”.

I look forward to the video clip. I am sure it will shine a light on yet another area that I need to grow in daily!!!
