Tuesday Town Hall 24…When Would You?

Posted by: Sonny   in Personal, Townhall Tuesday

tues-town-hall-18We live in a great time in history.  The levels of comfort, convenience, information, entertainment, and leisure, among other things, have never been found in history like it is now.  Some of us enjoy the study of history and may even dream of living in some bygone era.

The beginning of the 20th century, the settling of the old west, England in its days of power, and many other times fascinate many people.  Even the days when our King, Jesus, walked the dusty roads of Jerusalem might be a very interesting time to live.

I would just like for some of you to share your dreams today.

If you could live in another era what would it be?

What makes that time period special for you?

What do you think it would be like?

And finally, what would you miss the most about the time you live in now?

Love you all

There are many time periods that fascinate me. I would love to have met our Savior face to face while he walked on this earth. And, as a big fan of the Anne of Green Gables books (and movies), times in the past which were less rushed and when people were less encumbered by things of the world seem sweet relief to a life that is very hectic.

However, after pondering which time period would be a best fit for me, I realized that this one is the one I think I would like the best. We are just now starting to see women allowed in certain professions, and I think it would have been much more difficult for me (as a women) to be a mathematician in earlier time periods. Also, I like the fact that I am allowed to get on this blog and respond to theological ideas and questions, which (disregarding the fact that a blog wouldn’t have been there anyway) I would not have been able to do in earlier time periods.

I think we still have a long way to go, as evidenced by the fact that a women can be a pastor in the Church of God, but women are not allowed on the Pastor’s Council (where is the logic in that!?!). But, all in all, I am grateful that we have come far enough in this issue that I am allowed to have a career in math and participate in theology.

Must not be many students of history or fans of fantasy reading.

Of course, living during the time of Christ and being able to meet him in person would be tremendous. :D

Also, I think traveling with the Apostle Paul would be cool. To see the pre-Constantinian church in person would be eye-opening concerning what it means to follow Christ as part of a Spirit-empowered community (the closest that we get to this ethos today is probably in the underground church in China).

One of the things which I would miss a lot would be the ease of communication. I called my grandmother yesterday and wished her happy birthday (and chatted a bit). It was a blessing to hear her voice.

I would prefer the June Cleaver/Andy Griffith times. No cell phones, e-mail, just plain, simple living. To see children playing outside and being inventive with their surroundings. To see close knit communities that have time for each other — not just rushing around. This would be so peaceful to me. I wouldn’t miss a thing from today!

Over the years I have pondered the thought of living in bible days. I of course, assumed I would be who I am today, a believer, compassionate, etc., maybe defend Jesus or die trying. But one of my journeys led me to wonder who would I have been? Would I have been a Ruth, or would I have been Orpah? Would I have been faithful to sacrifice like Esther or would I have had the reputation of the woman at the well? Would I have been a warrior judge, like Deborah?
I could go on and one with the list, but since I do not see myself as strong enough to have accomplished, I am thankful that I am here, here and now. I do long for the time past when more people focused on their family, who they would turn out to be, not on how many toys we could accumulate.
I would miss the fact that I can reach my friends and family at any time within minutes or hours. I could use a 3 day walk, but I prefer my transportation. I hate the phone, I would not miss it, yet I like to hear my children and grandchildren on the other end.
There is always something to keep me from openly saying I would not miss my stuff, however, if I lived then, I would not even imagine the ‘stuff’ we have access to in this time. Right?!

I would like to live in the late 1800′s or early 1900′s. I would enjoy the peace of that time. I would also enjoy:

Less outside influence on my children
More quality time at home with family
Less worry about clothes, design, fashion- inside the home and out
Feeling of Community
Canned Food- LOVE IT (Especially Canned Corn)
I would know how to cook!
And so on–

I would miss:
Indoor plumbing
Easy access to hospitals

I would say the 1850′s.

I love to study and read about that time period

Families back then were probably closer than they are now.

I think I would like to have lived back in time before Columbus discovered America. I would like to have been a member of a Cherokee tribe. Living off the land and using basic tools to live a siimple life. Having family close and dedication to a group of people in our community so interwoven that the whole tribe worked together for the betterment of all. I know some traditions would be very demanding and the work load would be very different but I still think I would enjoy the rustic nature of it.

I know I would miss indoor plumbing and paper products. :emb:

Love ya,

Nancy
