I still believe that we are punished through our own feelings of guilt and our conscience tells us we did wrong, but we did it any way. If we never did wrong would we feel compelled to repent? Therefore God has built in an automatic correction mechanism in us. He doesn't make us do anything, but he gives us the instructions right in our bodies. We just have to choose to accept it. I wish I did more. I don't know if this makes sense, but how else could we know when we have done wrong. It may be subtle to some and overbearing to others, but it is there. God pokes and prods and gives information to us subconsciously that we are to follow or the guilt will overtake us and bring us back to God. If we choose not to listen then any punishment God uses will not really work anyhow as we are in more danger at that point. I think God still puts the input in, but those who turn away from him choose to ignore the message.
