What Really Matters

saving-grace-print-c10317366It has been a long week.  My pastor is retiring in a little over a week and we have had to be at church almost every night for interviews with prospective pastors.  We have three Godly men to choose from and that in itself is not an easy task for all of us.  We also have a special baptism service tonight to attend.  It is great to be a part of the Kingdom but it is sometimes work.  But it is work that has eternal benefits.  It is awesome.  It has also not left me as much time as usual to write anything substantial for this blog.

Last night as my wife and I were coming home though, we were a couple of cars back from a teenager that lost control of his automobile and spun out, crashed into a guard rail, bounced off, spun around, careened into the opposite guardrail and finally came to a stop, sideways in the right lane of the interstate.  We eased around and stopped because the car was still in the road and we wanted to make sure nothing was wrong with the occupants, and to see about getting the car out of the road.  It was dark and I was afraid that someone else was going to come crashing into it.

All of this worked out and is not really why I am writing about it.  I am relating it because of what was going on and being said by the three teenage boys that were out of the car.  They were freaking out.  They couldn’t stand still and all were on phones already.  But the driver was calling out a couple of things over and over.  He was saying that his father was going to kill him and he kept asking everyone if his car was totaled.

I understand his concern.  I unfortunately had a number of accidents when I was younger also.  I am sure that I freaked out back then also but I do not remember exactly what I was concerned about.  But I haven’t been able to stop thinking of this young man’s concerns.  His father’s reaction and the state of the car was the main things he worried about.

I hope that my kids would not be concerned that I might kill them if they lived through an accident.  I hope that they know that I am only concerned with their health and safety.  I need to make sure they know this.  I also hope that they are not just concerned with stuff also.  This teenager asked at least seven or eight times if his car was totaled.

I do not know if it was just a reaction to what had happened or if this kid really was concerned only about his father killing him and the state of his car but I wish we all would get concerned about what really matters.  What I believe really matters are things eternal.  The work of the Kingdom.  The spreading of the good news that Jesus is the Christ and He reigns right now.  That the fields are ripe and we need to be making disciples.

We have an opportunity to choose a new pastor Sunday night.  I hope we choose wisely and that the one we do choose knows what really matters and can bring the members of my church to a consensus about how to reach and keep a community of lost souls that surround us.  I hope my kids do not have any more accidents but if they do I hope they know what really matters.  I hope the people of God that make up the whole body of Christ learn what really matters because if the evidence shows anything, it shows we have a lot of problems knowing-

What really matters.

Love you all

tues-thIn case you haven’t heard, another useless church slaying occurred Sunday.  A pastor was shot and killed during service and a couple of others were wounded.  The story can be found here and other places.

This was just another senseless attack in a ever increasing string that has occurred lately.  No one so far even knows what the motive for this one was.  This murderous interruption to a worship service has many in the church discussing the issues of church safety and the carrying of weapons in church services.  There are also larger issues to discuss.  So if you would, I would like to read your feedback and answers to these questions.

Do you think Jesus is okay with any of his followers shooting someone in self defense?

Do you think it would be wise for just anyone to carry a gun in church?  Would you?

If you would carry a gun, under what circumstances would you use it?

If you are against all of this, carrying weapons and using them, then what do you think is our role in protection of ourselves and others?

Finally, what caliber would Jesus recommend?

jesus-ar15That last one is just a light hearted one meant to keep us from getting too angry in case we disagree.  But this is a very serious topic and I have read a lot of opinions already.

Care to share yours?

Love you all

tues-townhallMy pastor is retiring at the end of this month.  This saddens me because he is not only a great man of God; he is the only pastor I have had.  No one really enjoys change much but the leader of a church leaving can raise concerns and even cause some arguments and dissension in a local body of believers.  There have been some questions raised because of a new young adult fellowship that has been initiated.  I have also played a part in the establishment of this group.  And I am assuring anyone that reads this that we are not doing or saying anything to cause division.  Wayne, one of this group put it exactly the way all should see it.  He said The Bridge (our group) is an addition, not a subtraction.  We want to help each other and the unchurched in these age ranges in our community.

The church has started the process of determining who will take up the mantle of our pastor and move this congregation forward.  We all seem to have different ideas about what we think we want in a pastor but the question should be what do we need.  Every church is different and has different ministry opportunities and finds itself in the middle of different communities.  No two will need the same things.  But I want to ask a few questions here today for discussion.  A lot of my commentators go to my church but not all.  And I know there are other readers.  I ask that all respond.  These questions are not just about my church.

What role does age play into your choice?

Do you think a couple with children living at home would be a positive or a negative choice?  Why?

How important is “style” to you?  This is meant in relation to their preaching.

Would you want someone you have known previously to be your pastor?

How much education should the pastor have?

Would you want a single pastor?  Why or why not?

Should someone in your local assembly (church) have the first shot?

Do you have any special requirements you are looking for?

These are just a few that I am wondering about for now.  If the comments come I may add more as they warrant.  I am not looking for the things we should all be in agreement about already.  We all know we need someone with integrity and anointing, someone that is a student of the bible, and someone that is filled with the Spirit and operates in His gifts.  These and other such things are not what I am looking for.  I am looking for practical things that you are interested in.

This is not for comments that are meant to demean anyone.  Jesus is monitoring this discussion with me.

Love you all
