“The reason Jesus gave for a man marrying a woman is the historical account of Adam and Eve…Was Jesus wrong? Is there a Biblical historical basis for a man marrying a woman? I lean toward believing the scholars who believe that Genesis was historical and really happened.”

tues-town-ha-2lThis statement was made in one of the comments the other day here.  There were a few other statements made about literal interpretations of Genesis.  As far as creation is concerned, there are at least four different views about its historicity and probably more.  Some view the creation account in Genesis as informing us about God’s literal six-twenty four hour day’s creation, a real Garden of Eden and a man and a woman named Adam and Eve.  Another group of people see it as literal in the sense of the garden and Adam and Eve but that the days are not literal twenty four hour days and instead might be representing ages or eras.  Another group does not believe much of any of this is literal at all and just points to God as creator and how He intended the relationship with His creation to be and that somewhere we failed.  And finally, some view Genesis as well as a lot of the bible as myth and really has no bearing on anything much.

Which of these, or some other view, do you believe?

Are you tolerant of any of the other views?

What do you think might be the consequences of holding to any of the other views?

Would any of you care to answer the questions in the quote at the beginning of this article?

ADDITIONAL ADDED QUESTION…Does any of this matter as far as our mission goes?

I invite all to participate and hope we can discuss this irenically.  Please stay on topic because I will be asking some more about Genesis in future posts.

Love you all

tues-thThe church belongs to Jesus.  It is not a building or a denomination.  It is instead made up of all of those people who believe that He is Lord and who follow Him.  It is by necessity varied and disjointed in some ways, definitely not perfect, but still a jewel in Gods eyes.

Today I want to ask you about denominations.  There are a few big, recognized ones but also many smaller offshoots from these.  They all believe something different than the rest which is why we are not all under just one.  I was just wondering about a few things where denominations are concerned.

Have you ever left a denomination and why?

What made you choose the one you are in?

What is a strong point in your denomination?

Do you see any weak points about your denomination?

Are you in a denomination that tolerates others or does yours think they are the only ones that have it right?

Please share any stories you might want about your denomination or the ones you may have left.

Love you all

Tuesday Town Hall 25…Gambling?

Posted by: Sonny    in Belief, Sin, Townhall Tuesday

tues-town-ha3llI missed all but the last seconds of a news report about the legalization of gambling in my state, Alabama, a couple of hours ago.  What I did see was the statistics proclaiming that 67% of the residents here approved of it.  Gambling, to my knowledge is not addressed specifically in the bible.

I know there are arguments about the addictions and abuses of gambling.  I also know some people are addicted to and abuse other things like cheeseburgers and donuts.  So leaving the ideas about addictions aside I propose the following questions for discussion.

Is all gambling wrong in Gods eyes and why?

How do you justify your views?

If you were in charge would you receive offerings from the winnings of a gambler or lottery player?

What say you?

Tuesday Town Hall 24…When Would You?

Posted by: Sonny    in Personal, Townhall Tuesday

tues-town-hall-18We live in a great time in history.  The levels of comfort, convenience, information, entertainment, and leisure, among other things, have never been found in history like it is now.  Some of us enjoy the study of history and may even dream of living in some bygone era.

The beginning of the 20th century, the settling of the old west, England in its days of power, and many other times fascinate many people.  Even the days when our King, Jesus, walked the dusty roads of Jerusalem might be a very interesting time to live.

I would just like for some of you to share your dreams today.

If you could live in another era what would it be?

What makes that time period special for you?

What do you think it would be like?

And finally, what would you miss the most about the time you live in now?

Love you all

Tuesday Town Hall 23…Great Memories

Posted by: Sonny    in Body of Christ

tues-town-hall-18Today’s discussion is going to be lighthearted and friendly.  I need a break from the heavy lifting.

What is your most memorable experience in a church service?

Please exclude salvation, baptism, and such.  We all should remember those and praise God daily for them.  I am talking about something out of the ordinary.

What is the funniest thing you ever saw happen in church?

We are human and should be able to laugh, even in church.  I believe God laughs at us more than we might imagine.

Please share your stories.  I am sure there are many.

Love you all
