Tuesday Town Hall 8…Church Choice?

Posted by: Sonny    in Church, Townhall Tuesday

I am blessed.  I have been fortunate in the choice of where I attend church.  My church is filled with some very loving people, a great pastor, powerful praise and worship and many opportunities for Kingdom work.  It is my first church and my first pastor.

But some of you have had to change churches for some reason or other.  And a lot of you have gone through a pastoral change.  I wonder sometimes about how someone goes about changing their church membership.

A few weeks ago we discussed some of the things we like and look for in a preacher.  This week’s discussion is in that same vein.

So, let’s say you have had to move to another state where you do not know anyone.  Maybe it was employment related.  You make the move, settle into your work, and then start looking for a church.

Here are a few questions about this process I want you to answer.

How soon do you start your search for a church?

What are some of the methods that you would employ to check out different churches?

What would you look for in a church that would make you want to become a member?

No, I am not leaving the church I am at.  I am thrilled to serve right where I am and I just started a new blog for my church here. It is also listed in my Blogroll.  So no, I am not going anywhere at the moment.

I was just wondering.

Love you all.

Tuesday Town Hall 7…Thank You

Posted by: Sonny    in Townhall Tuesday

I just want to thank everybody who has visited, read and commented on this site.  I love you all and am going to keep this short.  We are coming up on one of the most important holidays we have.  Or at least that is what I think.

Thanksgiving.

But as we look around it is being left behind to some degree.  How much longer will it be before it becomes totally changed to the pre Christmas Christmas or Christmas Shopping Holiday?    Thanksgiving just does not have a chance.  It is not in the same league as Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Christmas or even Easter because of its lack in generating gift expenditures.  And it doesn’t even compare to New Years or the 4th because alcohol consumption is not the main focus.

But if you do live in America, you do have so much to be thankful for.  So for today, the question is simple.

What are you especially thankful for?

Have a great Thanksgiving and remember it is so much more than just a day off to eat and watch football.

Love you all.

Halloween just passed and I ignored the topic here and am not actually writing about it now either.  But it did come to my mind when I started thinking about today’s town hall discussion.

There are Christian sites out there that have people saying how much they like certain vampire book series, Harry Potter books and movies, heavy metal secular music, rap filled with violence and profanity, supernatural movies, books and other such things.  Some Christians think such things are a little inappropriate, some a terrible, foul stain on either ones spirit or ones witness, and some see nothing at all wrong with it.  There are also games with a lot of violence and supernatural aspects to them.

There are a lot of different sides to the issue and there are also a lot of different levels of objectionable material in the various medium that I mentioned.  There are also many things like tarot cards, mediums and spiritualists, Ouija boards, etc.  I bring these up to let you know I am not talking about these or Halloween or actual witchcraft and others.

I want to stay focused on types of entertainment.

So how do you see these things?

Do you participate and what does it take for you to say; no, that is not for me?

Do you draw any lines that separate what is objectionable between adults and children?

Let me know what you think.

Love you all.

Let me wish all those veterans and active duty personel that have served to protect this nation and my family a very happy Veterans Day.  If you know a vet, let them know how much you appreciate their sacrifice.

On to todays town hall discussion.

I haven’t had the opportunity to sit under many preachers.  I have been to a few revivals and watched a few TV preachers.  I recently read some comments by some people about great preachers and their different styles.

As far as styles go, there are some who carefully try to exposit the scripture, some who address topical issues with scripture, some who do both, and some who do neither and instead try to twist scripture into something it is not to bring about something they want.  There are the quiet scholarly teacher types, there are the loud and fast talking charismatic types, and there are the performance based types of preachers that just seem to be putting on a show.

There are preachers that wear suits, some who dress casually, and some who wear Metallica t-shirts.  There are some who stand at a pulpit, some who sit on a stool, some who pace the stage, some who get down there with the flock and some just never are still at all.

I have seen or heard of many different types of preacher and do not intend this to be anything derogatory at all.

The questions for this Tuesday are as follows…

Does a preachers dress mean anything to you?

What type of preacher do you prefer, especially as your pastor?

What exactly makes preaching “good” to you?

What famous or at least known preachers have you enjoyed hearing?

Love you all.

Today is the day we find out if the world ends.  That dreaded election that has most everyone upset thinking that there is actually no good choice.  Be that as it may, I choose to ignore it myself.  I will be checking in here and watching a TV show and reading my bible. Whatever happens, I will still serve the Lord.

Saying that, I expect less response today for this Town Hall discussion because most will be glued to their favorite news channel, experiencing all the ups and downs that make them feel alive and involved.  If only Jesus made us feel that way?

This may be a little fun and a little easy today.  But for those who want to participate, I hope it will be interesting.

Let’s discuss alien life.  Some people are adamant in their belief that there is life on some distant planet.  Others disagree vehemently.  What do you think?

Do you believe that there is intelligent life out there in the vastness of the universe or did God only place life here?

If you do believe in alien life, how do you reconcile it with the gospel?

And finally, just because of what day it is, which candidate would you want to be POTUS in the case of a visitation from outer space?

And a thanks again to Pink Floyd for the title.

Okay.  Have at it.

Love you all.
